Floq.
Trading and education platform pairing live market data with a structured learning path
What we were solving for.
Trading platforms and education platforms are usually built by different teams and feel like it. Users bounce between the "learn" app and the "trade" app, credentials don't share, progress doesn't carry, and the transition from student to trader is a friction wall that costs the business retention.
Floq wanted the opposite — one platform where a user could learn a strategy, then execute it on live market data, then discuss it with the community, all inside the same account with continuous session state. The IA challenge alone was significant. The technical challenge — market data streaming, course delivery, video, community, and admin — sitting on top of that was substantial.
And it had to feel calm. Trading UIs default to hostile density. Floq wanted density with room to breathe.
How we built it.
We architected around two primary surfaces: Pasar (the live market) and Academy (structured courses). Both share auth, profile, notification, and community state. Both live in one design system so the visual context feels continuous when users move between them.
Pasar uses a WebSocket layer for real-time price + orderbook updates, with a fallback to server-side rendering for SEO and first paint. Academy is a full LMS — modules, lessons, video, quizzes, progress tracking, certificates — built on a custom Node backend rather than an off-the-shelf tool because tighter integration with the trading side mattered more than course-authoring bells and whistles.
The community layer is deliberately quiet: reactions, threaded comments, no full-blown forums. Users came for market and education; community is a support layer, not a destination.
What was in the build.
- Live market surface (Pasar) with real-time price + orderbook
- Full LMS (Academy) with video, quizzes, certificates
- Unified auth + profile + notifications
- Custom admin for course authoring + market listings
- Community layer (comments, reactions)
- Design system spanning both surfaces
- Bilingual EN/ID
The stack.
Frontend
Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS
Backend
Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, WebSocket
Video
Mux, Custom video progress tracking
Infrastructure
Vercel, AWS, Cloudflare
What shipped.
Floq launched with Pasar and Academy live day one. Users move between the two without confusion. The IA didn't fight the density and the density didn't fight the IA — the specific outcome the team was after.
The client's feedback: "a live market and a school in one product, and it all feels like one calm surface. Our users stopped asking where things were."
By the numbers.
