The problem

What we were solving for.

Octarine occupies the intersection of streetwear, editorial, and lifestyle — a positioning that traditional Shopify themes actively fight. Templated grids of product tiles read as bargain-hunter energy; Octarine needed the opposite. The store needed to feel like flipping through a well-produced magazine that happens to sell things at the back.

The team was also planning a launch cadence built around drops (limited-run collections, timed collaborations) rather than a persistent catalog. That model needs specific engineering — countdown mechanics, inventory locks under sudden traffic, drop-specific landing pages that reuse across campaigns without becoming clones.

Everything had to work bilingually (English/Indonesian) and needed to feel Indonesian-native without leaning on any regional design cliches.

The approach

How we built it.

We chose a custom build over Shopify. Shopify would have shipped faster and constrained the design ceiling immediately. Instead we built a headless storefront in Astro (chosen for content-heavy pages, output speed, and simple ISR-style regeneration) with a purpose-built CMS for drops, promos, and editorial content.

Product data lives in the CMS. Drops are first-class objects with start/end times, inventory caps, unlock rules, and editorial content attached to each. Checkout uses Midtrans for local payment methods (BCA, GoPay, OVO, Dana) alongside global cards — the local payment split is the single biggest conversion delta in Southeast Asian ecommerce.

The design language leans hard on typography and space. Photography is the hero, product copy is short, secondary information hides until requested. Nothing shouts — because Octarine's brand doesn't shout.

Scope

What was in the build.

  • Bilingual EN/ID storefront
  • Custom CMS for drops, editorial, promos
  • Local + global payment integration
  • Inventory locking under drop launch load
  • Editorial content architecture
  • Design system and component library
  • SEO + Core Web Vitals optimization
Tech

The stack.

Frontend

Astro, React (islands), Tailwind CSS

CMS

Custom PHP/MySQL admin, Editorial + drop scheduling

Payments

Midtrans, Stripe, GoPay, OVO, Dana

Infrastructure

Cloudflare, Hostinger, Custom CDN for product imagery

The outcome

What shipped.

Octarine launched on schedule with a distinct visual voice. Drops now ship on the team's cadence — not the engineering team's cadence — because the CMS was scoped to the drop model from day one. Editorial content sits alongside commerce in the same admin, which matters when the brand's marketing IS the product.

The client's feedback was that every drop landed on time and the brand stayed consistent end-to-end. The launch felt like a release, not a scramble — the specific outcome we were optimising for.
