Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single most-neglected free SEO asset in most law firms. A properly optimized GBP consistently generates more qualified consultations than the average paid Google Ads campaign — for zero ongoing spend.
Here is the exact playbook we run for every law firm client during onboarding.
Step 1: Claim and verify
If you have not claimed your listing:
- Go to google.com/business
- Search for your firm — if it exists as an unclaimed listing, claim it. If not, create it.
- Verify via postcard, phone, or video (Google has been rolling out video verification for legal categories).
Do not use a virtual office or PO box for the verified address. Google catches this and suppresses the listing from the local pack.
Step 2: Primary category is everything
Set your primary category to the specific practice, not "Law Firm."
Best-performing primary categories:
- Personal Injury Attorney — for PI firms
- Immigration Attorney — for immigration firms
- Family Law Attorney — for divorce/custody firms
- Criminal Justice Attorney — for DWI/criminal defense
- Estate Planning Attorney — for wills/trusts
Then add every relevant secondary category. GBP allows up to 10. Use them.
Step 3: Complete every field, even the optional ones
Every field you fill is a ranking signal Google measures against competitors:
- Hours of operation (mark holiday hours specifically)
- Service areas (specific cities, not just "Texas")
- Attributes — "Online appointments", "Wheelchair accessible", "Free consultations", "LGBTQ+ friendly", "Women-led business", etc.
- Products / services — list each specific service (uncontested divorce, DACA renewal, 18-wheeler accident, etc.)
- Description — full 750 characters, keyword-woven
Most law firm listings fill 50% of fields. The one that fills 100% wins tie-breakers with Google.
Step 4: Photos — 20+ minimum
Photos are one of the strongest engagement signals. GBP ranks listings partly on how much interaction the photos get.
Upload:
- Exterior of the office (with signage visible)
- Interior — reception, conference room, attorney offices
- Team photos of each attorney and support staff
- Behind-the-scenes photos (in the courthouse, at community events)
- Logo (as the profile picture)
Stock imagery hurts. Real photos of your real office and real people convert. Refresh with new photos every 30–60 days — Google rewards active listings.
Step 5: Reviews — cadence over volume
Reviews are the single most important local pack signal. Get them steadily, not in bursts:
- After every consultation, send a text with a direct GBP review link
- Include the client's first name and case type ("Hi Maria — a review of your immigration consultation today would help other families find us: [link]")
- Reply to every single review, positive and negative, within 24 hours. Bar-compliant replies build trust and show Google the listing is actively maintained.
- Target 2–5 new reviews per month, ongoing
Firms with fewer than 15 reviews in competitive metros rarely rank in the local pack. See our full local SEO playbook for the review cadence system.
Step 6: Google Posts, weekly
The Posts feature is underused by 90% of law firms. Post weekly:
- A recent case result (with bar-compliant disclaimers)
- A firm news update
- A blog post excerpt with link
- An upcoming free legal clinic or community event
Each post lives for 7 days and shows in your knowledge panel. Consistent posting = engagement signal = ranking lift.
Step 7: Q&A section
Anyone can post questions on your listing — and anyone can answer them. This means competitors and disgruntled prospects can post negative questions and answer them themselves.
Get ahead of it:
- Post 20+ questions yourself (from an owner account) — the FAQs prospects actually ask
- Provide the answers immediately
- Monitor for new questions weekly and answer within 24 hours
Google indexes this content and shows it directly in the profile. It is free FAQ real estate.
Step 8: Booking + messaging
If Google offers booking in your area, wire it to your existing booking system so prospects can book directly from the GBP without leaving the search results.
Turn on messaging — but only if you can respond in under an hour. Slow message replies actively hurt the listing.
Step 9: Insights review, monthly
Every month, check GBP insights:
- Views by source (search vs maps)
- Search queries — what people actually searched to find you (huge SEO gold for content ideas)
- Actions — website clicks, calls, direction requests
- Photo views vs competitor averages
Adjust your listing based on what people search. If "affordable immigration lawyer Houston" is in your top queries and you do not have that phrase anywhere on your listing, add it.
Common mistakes
- Using a PO box or virtual office (suppression risk)
- Keyword-stuffing the business name ("Best Personal Injury Attorney Houston Cheap")
- Buying reviews (detection + suspension risk)
- Ignoring negative reviews
- Never posting after initial setup
- Skipping the description or writing a generic one
30-day GBP optimization sprint
- Week 1: Claim + verify, set primary + secondary categories, complete every field
- Week 2: Upload 20+ photos, seed 15+ Q&A pairs, request first review batch
- Week 3: Start Google Posts cadence, respond to any reviews
- Week 4: Set up review-request automation for every closed consultation
By day 30, most firms see a 30–80% increase in GBP impressions and 2–4× website clicks from the map pack.
