Ecommerce conversion rate optimization (CRO) is where the money is. Doubling your conversion rate doubles revenue at zero additional customer acquisition cost. Here are the 15 tactics we consistently apply to ecommerce clients.
Homepage
1. Above-the-fold value prop. Your homepage has 3 seconds to explain what you sell and why. Not tagline. Not brand poetry. Specific product + specific value in one clear headline.
2. Featured product with real photography. Not stock. Not lifestyle-only. Actual products people can click.
3. Mobile-first design. Over 70% of ecommerce traffic is mobile. Design mobile first, then adapt to desktop.
Product pages
4. Multiple photo angles. Minimum 5 images per product. Include: hero, lifestyle-in-use, detail shot, size reference, back/side angles.
5. Reviews visible above the fold. Star rating + review count in the top section. If you have <10 reviews, focus on getting more before optimising anything else.
6. Clear shipping info. Displayed before the buy button. Ambiguous shipping costs are the #1 cause of cart abandonment.
7. Real inventory numbers. "Only 3 left in stock" creates urgency without feeling fake if it's actually true.
8. Size guides that work. For apparel or fit-sensitive products, a proper size guide with body measurements (not just S/M/L) reduces returns 20–30%.
Cart
9. Free shipping threshold. Progress bar showing "Add $12 more for free shipping" lifts average order value 15–25%.
10. Trust badges near the buy button. SSL padlock, payment method logos, satisfaction guarantee. Not a distraction — real trust signals move undecided buyers.
11. Save-cart-for-later. Add-to-favorites next to add-to-cart captures signal from window-shoppers who aren't ready yet.
Checkout
12. Guest checkout as default. Forcing account creation loses 30% of buyers. Offer account creation post-purchase.
13. One-page checkout. Multi-step checkouts hurt conversion. Keep it to one scrollable page with visible progress.
14. Autofill everything. Address autocomplete via Google Places API. Card autofill via browser. Every field the user types manually is a chance to lose them.
15. Multiple payment methods. Credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna/Afterpay (for BNPL) covers ~95% of buyer preferences. Missing any of these costs you conversions.
Beyond the checklist
Once you've applied all 15, run A/B tests on:
- Hero headline copy
- CTA button copy ("Buy Now" vs "Add to Cart" vs "Shop the Look")
- Product page layout (photo left vs right)
- Trust badge placement
- Shipping message wording
Each test typically moves conversion 5–15% up or down. Compounded across 10 tests, that's 50–150% total lift.
What to measure
- Conversion rate: overall + by device (mobile usually lags — that's where the biggest wins are)
- Cart abandonment rate: industry average ~70%; anything above 75% signals a specific checkout problem
- Average order value: watch for BOPIS lift after free shipping thresholds
- Repeat purchase rate: 30-day and 90-day cohorts
Tools we use
- Google Analytics 4 — free, unavoidable
- Microsoft Clarity — free, session recordings + heatmaps
- Hotjar — paid, deeper user testing tools
- Optimizely / GrowthBook — A/B testing infrastructure at scale
