How it works

How this calculator estimates cost.

Base cost scales with business size: SMB ($50–120k), mid-market ($120–300k), enterprise ($300–500k+). Build approach adjusts the multiplier — Odoo extension is 30–50% cheaper than fully custom because you inherit Odoo's module ecosystem.

Each module adds cost proportional to its complexity. Manufacturing and warehouse are the heaviest (BOM, MRP, cycle counts, shop-floor). Finance and inventory are foundational and always included at a base level even if not explicitly selected.

Multi-entity + multi-country adds meaningful cost — every country adds its own tax engine, currency handling, and reporting format. Data migration is often 15–25% of the build cost on brownfield projects with messy legacy data.

FAQ

Common questions.

How accurate is this ERP cost calculator?
Ranges are based on real custom ERP and Odoo-extension projects we have delivered for SMB and mid-market clients. It is a scoping tool — 75% of projects land within the range. The final quote depends on data migration complexity, integration scope, and how well your team can supply source-of-truth data for each module.
When is custom ERP the right answer vs off-the-shelf?
Custom is right when your workflow is genuinely non-standard, when you plan to run this ERP for 10+ years, and when total cost of ownership favours ownership over subscription. If off-the-shelf (SAP, NetSuite, Odoo) covers 90%+ of your workflows, use it. If less than 60%, custom likely wins. Between 60–90%, hybrid (off-the-shelf + custom modules) usually wins.
How long does a custom ERP take?
Small (3–5 modules): 4–7 months. Mid-market (6–10 modules): 8–14 months. Enterprise (full scope, multi-entity): 12–36 months. Always phased — early modules go live first, later modules follow in 3–6 month waves.
Do you extend Odoo, or only build from scratch?
Both. Odoo is our default when the client wants an open-source foundation with a huge module ecosystem — we configure it, extend it with custom modules, and integrate it with the rest of the business. Full-custom is our default when the client's workflow is unusual enough that Odoo's conventions would fight the business.
What ongoing cost should we expect?
Budget 15–25% of the build cost per year in ongoing engineering retainer — bug fixes, tax rule updates, feature additions, security patches, integration maintenance. Hosting adds $500–$5,000/month depending on scale. Skipping maintenance is how custom ERPs decay into legacy systems within 5 years.
What about data migration?
Data migration is a separate line item — typically $10,000–$50,000+ depending on data volume, source system quality, and mapping complexity. It is the single most-underestimated cost in ERP projects. We include a written migration plan in every proposal.
